Currently I am reading a sci-fi romance cross-over by Ruby Lionsdrake. I’ve read somewhere that this is the author Lindsay Buroker under another name. Mercenary Instinct is the first book in The Mandrake Company series.

The story is interesting, the characters believable and the world well thought out. One thing I especially like is the wonderful camaraderie between members of the Mandrake crew, making their interactions much more realistic. I also like that each character has a sense of individual personality.

My only critical comment about this book is that a character called Striker is referred to as Strider instead on a few occasions. It caused me some confusion and I had to re-read the sections before I realised it was a mistake and not some suddenly introduced character.

FRIDAY 56:

Sure, they might have been protecting their investment, but the result was that Ankari and the others weren’t being mauled by horny brutes who couldn’t even keep their hands to themselves in the pouring rain in the middle of a predator-filled jungle.

BOOK BEGINNINGS:

Ankari Markovich dangled from a rope, making faces as she chiseled fossilized gunk from the walls of a twenty-thousand-year-old latrine shaft.

    • It was a good read and I did see a lot of raving reviews (that’s what made me try it). I get the feeling this is one of those series where the books might improve as they progress.
